Hockey shin guard size chart
Sit with your knee bent at 90 degrees and measure from the center of the kneecap down to the top of the skate boot. At CCM that length in inches is about your size: a 14" guard fits a 14" to 15" shin and a 5'4" to 5'8" player.1 Bauer measures to the center of the ankle instead, so its chart reads 2 to 3 inches longer than the guard size (its 14" fits a 16" to 17" shin).2 Youth guards run about 7" to 10", junior 10" to 13", senior 13" and up; each brand draws those lines a little differently.1,2,3
How to measure for shin guards
- Bauer: measure from the center of the kneecap to the center of the outer ankle.2
- Sit with the knee bent at 90 degrees. Measure from the middle of the knee to the top of the skate boot, just above the first eyelet (not the top of the tongue).1
- CCM: if the tibia length and height point to different sizes, go by tibia length first.1
- Measure height to confirm the level (Youth, Junior or Senior).1
- Warrior chart (via HockeyMonkey): sit with legs at 90 degrees and measure from the center of the kneecap to the top of the skate where the tongue starts.3
- Sher-Wood chart (via HockeyMonkey): sit and measure from the center of the kneecap to the top of the skate boot.4
- HockeyMonkey general method: wear skates laced up, sit with the knee at 90 degrees, and measure from the top of the boot to the center of the kneecap, rounded up to the nearest inch.5

How shin guards should fit with skates
- CCM: players who wear shin guards outside the skate tongue ("Tongues In") should take one size bigger than the chart suggests.1
- HockeyMonkey: wearing the guard over the tongue may call for a larger size, and wearing it under the tongue generally a smaller one.5
- The guard should cover the kneecap and reach the top of the skate. Neither the kneecap nor the ankle should be exposed.3,5
- A guard that is too long or too short leaves the knee or the instep exposed.4
- Secure shin guards with shin guard straps or tape, never with tight hockey socks alone.4
- Tape over the socks: start just below the knee, then again just above the ankle or at mid-calf.5
- Try guards on with game socks. Between sizes, choose the larger one.4
- A shin guard has a knee cap, a hard shell over the shin and a calf wrap. It should feel snug without limiting movement. Try it on with base layers.6
Where the brands disagree
- Measuring points differ. Bauer measures from the center of the kneecap to the center of the outer ankle. CCM measures to the top of the skate boot just above the first eyelet. The Warrior chart measures to where the skate tongue starts.
- Rounding: HockeyMonkey rounds up to the nearest inch. CCM says to go by tibia length when height and tibia disagree. Neither page states the other's rule.
- Senior 14" height: CCM gives 5’4”–5’8”, Sher-Wood gives 5'7"-5'11", and the HockeyMonkey general chart gives 5'7"–5'11".
- Junior size range: CCM junior is 11"–13". Warrior junior is 10"–13". Sher-Wood junior is 10–12 in.
- Youth size range: CCM youth is 8"–10". Warrior youth is 7"–9".
- Senior 13": Warrior and Sher-Wood sell a senior 13". CCM's senior range starts at 14", where 13" is a junior size.
- Warrior's chart labels sizes S–XXL with a shin size in inches. CCM and Sher-Wood label sizes by inches only.
