Hockey helmet size chart
Wrap a soft tape around your head at the widest point, just above the eyebrows, and match the circumference to the chart for the exact helmet model, because ranges differ from model to model.1,2,3,4,5 On most of Bauer's current RE-AKT models a small covers about 20.4" to 22.4", a medium 22" to 23.6" and a large about 22.4" to 25.2"; CCM's Tacks 920 runs 50 to 56 cm, 54 to 60 cm and 57 to 63 cm.4,5 The front edge should sit about a finger above the eyebrows and the helmet should not move when you shake your head. A cage takes the same size as the helmet.1,3,6,7
How to measure your head for a hockey helmet
- Bauer: wrap a tape measure around the head approximately 1/2 inch (2 cm) above the eyebrow to get head circumference, then match it to the model's chart.1
- Bauer buying guide: measure about 1/4 inch above the eyebrows around the head.3
- CCM: measure the widest part of the head, from the forehead just above the brow around to the furthest point at the back of the head.2
- Use a soft tape kept level at mid-forehead, at the widest point (usually just above the ears), and round to the nearest quarter inch.8
- Sizes differ by brand and by model, so check the chart for the exact helmet, not a generic S/M/L.3,4,5
- Bauer: younger players between sizes can size up to allow for growth.3
- HockeyMonkey (Warrior chart): between sizes, the smaller size gives a snugger fit.8
- Hockey Canada fitting guide: player head sizes run from 6 1/8 to 8 1/8 (hat size), grouped XS to XL.6

How a hockey helmet should fit
- Bauer: the helmet should fit snugly but not be uncomfortable.1,3
- Bauer: the front edge sits one finger width above the eyebrows, and the ears line up with the ear cups.1
- Hockey Canada: the front of the helmet should fall just above the eyebrows.6
- There should be little or no space between the head and the helmet pads.3
- Shake test: the helmet should not move when the player shakes their head side to side and back and forth.3,6
- Bauer: when the head shakes, the helmet stays put and the skin on the forehead moves with it.3
- Hockey Canada: adjust the chin strap so it is snug to the chin. A strap hanging down is not properly fastened.6
- Hockey Canada: with a facial protector, one finger should fit snugly between the bottom of the chin and the chin cup.6
- Hockey Canada: keep the ear guards on and the CSA sticker visible. Painting the helmet, drilling holes, or removing side straps, clamps or the chin cup voids CSA certification.6
- Bauer: a hockey helmet does not prevent concussions.3
- Hockey Canada: replace a helmet that is cracked, has loose fittings or a missing liner, or has taken a severe impact.12
Cage and face shield fit
- Match the cage size to the helmet size: a Small helmet takes a Small cage, a Medium helmet takes a Medium cage, and so on.7
- Some cages are made to fit a specific helmet brand or model, so check compatibility before buying.7
- Hockey Canada: the facial shield or cage must be compatible with the helmet. Not all masks fit every helmet.6
- Bauer says the Bauer II facemask fits all Bauer helmets and most others.13
- The Bauer II facemask comes in XS, S, M and L and links to the Bauer helmet size guide. Its floating dual-density chin cup moves independently of the cage.13,14
- CCM's current cages include the FM580 and FM780, plus the FMFV1 in SR and JR. The FM580 has a multi-density foam chin cup.15,16
- Fitting steps: line up the top of the cage with the front of the helmet and fasten the top clips near the forehead. Fasten the J-clips on each side near the temples. The cage top should sit flush with the J-clips.7
- The chin should be centered in the chin cup and feel comfortable with the mouth closed.7
- Bauer: the chin cup sits beneath the player's chin.3
- Adjust the cage straps until the chin sits comfortably in the cup. The cage may move slightly when the mouth opens, but it should not shift out of place when the head shakes.7
- Hockey Canada: allow one finger to fit snugly between the bottom of the chin and the chin cup.6
- Never cut or alter a wire mask. Removing the chin cup voids CSA certification.6
- Facial protector styles: wire cage, polycarbonate shield, or a combination of the two.6
- Replace a cage that is rusted, bent, missing its stickers, or no longer fits well.7
- Hybrid shields may not be allowed in every league.7
- Wear a mouthguard even with a full facial protector.6
Certification and league rules
- USA Hockey requires HECC-certified helmets and facemasks in USA Hockey-sanctioned games.17
- Minnesota Hockey: HECC-certified helmets are required for all USA Hockey-sanctioned activities.18
- USA Hockey: attaching an add-on such as a Guardian Cap to a helmet voids its HECC certification.17
- USA Hockey (high school and below): required equipment includes a HECC-approved helmet with facemask, and a mouthguard for 12U and older. The mouthguard must be a non-clear color, and helmets must stay on while on the players' bench.19
- Chin strap length: USA Hockey and NFHS list the restriction as "Implied". NCAA sets it at two fingers.19
- Retailer summary: HECC cages are required for players 20 and under in USA minor hockey, and HECC certification expires about 6.5 years after the manufacture date on the sticker.7
- Retailer summary: CSA cages are required for all female players and players 20 and under in Canadian minor hockey. CE cages are required for players 20 and under in IIHF leagues.7
- Hockey Canada requires all minor and female players to wear CSA-certified full-face protectors, properly attached to CSA-certified hockey helmets.6,20
- Hockey Canada Rule 3.6(b): the CSA helmet must have a CSA facial protector securely attached and unaltered, with the chin strap fastened under the chin.20
- Hockey Canada Rule 3.6(c): minor and female players must wear a BNQ-certified throat protector.20
- Hockey Canada: a full facial protector or visor is compulsory in Senior and Major Junior (optional in male adult recreational). In all other categories, including female hockey, a CSA-certified full facial protector is compulsory.20
- Hockey Canada: the helmet and facial protector are worn on the players' bench. A mouthguard is compulsory where half visors are allowed.20
- CSA facial protector types: B1/1 white (any age, non-goalie); B2/2 orange (10 and under); D1/3 blue (goalie); C/4 yellow visor (18 and older).6,20
- Hockey Canada: HECC stickers do not apply in Canada. CSA certification does not expire; the date on the CSA sticker is the manufacture year.7,12
Where the sources disagree
- Bauer measuring height differs between its own pages: the size guide says about 1/2 inch (2 cm) above the eyebrow, and the buying guide says about 1/4 inch above the eyebrows. CCM says just above the brow at the widest part, and HockeyMonkey says mid-forehead, at the widest point, usually just above the ears.
- Helmet position: the commonly repeated "two fingers above the eyebrows" check comes from bicycle-helmet guidance and appears in no fetched hockey source. Bauer says one finger width above the eyebrows, and Hockey Canada says just above the eyebrows.
- Chin fit: Hockey Canada says one finger between the chin and the chin cup, and NCAA sets chinstrap length at two fingers. USA Hockey and NFHS give no number ("Implied").
- Warrior charts differ between retailers for the same size labels. Small is 21.3-22 in / 54-56 cm on HockeyMonkey's generic chart, 20.8-22.0 in / 53.0-56.0 cm for the Covert CF80, 21.2-22.0 in / 54.0-56.0 cm for the CF100, and 20.9-22.0 in / 53-56 cm for the Alpha One Pro. Large on the Alpha One Pro starts at 22.6 in / 57.5 cm with hat 7 1/8, but at 23.2 in / 59 cm on the other charts.
- Inline Warehouse labels the Warrior Covert CF80 and CF100 medium as "MG". It is stored as shown.
- The Bauer size guide text names FreeForm-fit models (RE-AKT 85, RE-AKT 150, HYPERLITE, PRODIGY, RE-AKT 100 YTH) that are not all in its current chart CSV.
- The CCM Tacks 70 JR and S sizes have the same range on the chart, 52.5-57 cm.
- CCM circ_in values combine the inch labels printed on the chart axis for whole-cm endpoints (for example 51 cm = 20.08, 56 cm = 22.05). Any range with a half-cm endpoint is null because the chart prints no inch value there.
- Hockey Canada playing rules make a full facial protector compulsory in all categories except Senior and Major Junior. This is broader than the retailer summary that CSA cages are required for females and players 20 and under.
