Used vs new hockey gear

Buy helmets new: you can't see a used helmet's impact history, and in the US its certification has an end date. Pants, shin guards, elbow pads, gloves and bags are usually fine used if they fit and the padding isn't crushed. Skates can be a good used buy when they fit your foot and the holders and steel are sound.

GearUsed?Why
HelmetBuy newYou can't verify its impact history, and in the US the HECC date limits how long it stays certified. Buy used only if it's new in the box with the certification valid for years to come.1,2,3
Cage or visorCheck carefullyIt must be certified, uncracked and unaltered, with the chin cup in place, and fit your helmet.4
Neck guardCheck carefullyCheck the certification mark and, for HECC guards, that it's less than 5 years old.5,4
SkatesCheck carefullySize them by the brand's chart, not your shoe size, and check the boot's stiffness, the holders and the steel. Steel can be replaced; a broken-down boot can't.6,4
StickCheck carefullyCheck the hand, flex, curve and cut length, and look for cracks, soft spots and a separating blade.6
Pants, shin guards, shoulder and elbow pads, glovesFine used, inspect itUsually fine used if the straps are intact, the padding isn't crushed, the stitching is sound and nothing is cracked.6,4
