Goalie pad size calculator
Most brands (Bauer, CCM, Vaughn, Warrior) size goalie pads by floor to knee: barefoot, knee slightly bent, measure from the floor to the middle of your kneecap. Brian's uses ankle to knee. The same measurement maps to different sizes in different brands, so always use the chart of the brand you're buying.
How to measure
- Floor to knee: Barefoot or in socks, feet shoulder-width apart, knee slightly bent: measure from the floor to the middle of your kneecap. Bauer calls this shin height. Bauer, CCM, Vaughn and Warrior size from it.1,2,3
- Ankle to knee: Barefoot, knee slightly bent: measure from the inside of your ankle bone up the shin to the middle of your kneecap. Brian's sizes from it.4,5,2
- Thigh rise: The extra height above the knee, written after the plus sign: 33+2 is a 33-inch pad with 2 inches of thigh rise. Most goalies choose +1 to +1.5; +2 and up seals the five-hole more. The top of the pad should sit about halfway up the thigh and never above the hips.5,2,6,4
Fit checks
- In the butterfly, the middle of your knee should land on the center of the knee stack. For a growing goalie, a knee slightly below center leaves room to grow.1,11,4,5
- Standing with your feet together on skates, the top of the pad shouldn't pass your hips.4,14
- Try pads on with your skates, pants and socks on.5,3
- Between two sizes: go down for mobility, up for coverage.2

Goalie stick paddle
- Goalie sticks are sized by paddle height, for example L-25": the letter is the blade direction (L is regular, for a goalie who catches with the left hand) and the number the paddle height.15,16
- Bauer's chart: youth 20"; junior 21" to 22"; intermediate 23" to 24"; senior 25" to 27" for goalies from 5'6" to 6'1", by preference.16
- The fit test: in your stance with skates, pads and blocker on, hold the stick where the shaft meets the paddle. The blade should sit flat on the ice with the blocker flush beside the pad. If the heel lifts, go up a size; if the toe lifts, go down. Between sizes, go down.17
Blocker and catcher
- Bauer sizes gloves and blockers by hand length, from the tip of the middle finger to the wrist crease: youth 4.5" to 5.5", junior 5.5" to 6.5", intermediate 6" to 7", senior 7" to 8.5".18
- Regular means you catch with your left hand and hold the stick with your right; Full Right is the reverse.15
